We’ve done it!
We’ve just heard that Buckland St Mary has been chosen as Village of the
Year for Somerset in the Calor 2008 competition.
Thanks go to the
farmers, gardeners and other businesses who allowed time in their busy
day to meet and talk to the the judges. The drivers of their cars;
Rosemary Ward-Smith for playing the harmonium at Birchwood; the friends
who set up the Village Hall, loaned tablecloths and crockery; the loan
of the digital projector and to Chris Watkis for operating it – showing
the Buckland 2002 Video, the ‘silent’ version; the beautiful place names
for each organisation and Judge.
Thanks to all the
groups and business who represented the Village with speakers and those
organisations who set up display boards illustrating their activities
within the community. Thanks to the helpers who provided and served
tea and made delicious cakes, and to Pam Martin for her beautiful flower
arrangements. And last but by no means least to Hilary Cumming and
Gill Horner who undertook the arduous task of organising and bringing
the whole thing together.
Everyone
sacrificed their time, gave of their talents and showed their
willingness to prove , once again, to the outside world that Buckland is
a thriving community.
But that’s not
the end – we now go forward to the National Competition which includes
the whole of the UK.
Well Done Buckland!
Presentation in Glastonbury
The Lord Lieutenant of
Somerset, Lady Gass presented the Somerset Village of the Year award to
Gill Horner, Jo Salter and Hilary Cumming at a ceremony in Glastonbury
Town hall on Thursday 25th September. The competition is
organised annually by the Somerset Campaign to Protect Rural England,
assisted by the County Council and sponsored by Calor Gas.
Buckland was overall winner in the four
categories - Community, People, Communications and Environment.
A ballot of all the
people actively involved in the village entry was taken to select an
additional five members to represent Buckland at the presentation.
Buckland St Mary now has the added honour of representing the county in
the Calor Village of the Year for England competition. This will give
the village the opportunity of gaining recognition at national level, as
well as a share of a prize fund totalling more than £40,000.

At
the Annual General meeting of the Buckland St Mary Parish Council, the
retiring Clerk, Mrs Gill Horner, was honoured with a presentation by David
Lamb in recognition of 12½
years in office during which time she has worked
unstintingly for the benefit of the Council and the local community.
Her expertise will be sorely missed.
